Directors & Staff


Director of Bands:  Matthew A. Weaver 

Mr. Weaver is currently in his second year as Director of Bands at Southside High School.  Mr. Weaver is a 2012 graduate of Jacksonville State University in Jacksonville, Alabama where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education.  While at JSU he performed with a number of ensembles including the Marching Southerners, Chamber Winds, the competitive Tuba Quartet, and the JSU Pep Band Hardcorps.  He was a 2008 scholarship member of the Rafael Mendez Brass Institute and is currently performing with the Pelham Street Brass Quintet.  Mr. Weaver is a member of the International Tuba Euphonium Association, the National Association for Music Education, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.  He enjoys camping, canoeing, street rods, and baseball.  He is engaged to Ms. Haley Frings of Highland School who serves as The PRIDE’s Colorguard Instructor.  Mr. Weaver loves to help young men and woman feel successful and become productive members of society through the media of the music classroom.

Associate Director of Bands: Alicia C. Probst

Mrs.Probst joins The PRIDE this year as Director at Rainbow Middle School and Assistant Director at Southside High School.  She and her husband, Dr. Christopher Probst, the new trumpet professor at Jacksonville State University, come to us from Warner Robins, Georgia, and are both really excited about joining our community!  Mrs. Probst will be entering her sixth year as a band director, having previously taught at Bonaire Middle and Veterans High Schools in the Warner Robins area and at Wheeler County High School in Alamo, Georgia.  She earned a Bachelor of Music degree from Berry College in Rome, Georgia, double-majoring in trumpet and vocal studies, and later earned a Master of Divinity degree from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary.  She has, over the last 17 years, worked with students in seven different countries, of all nationalities, ages 2 to 82, sharing the joy of making music with others wherever she goes.  In her time as a professional music educator, individual students and various instrumental and vocal ensembles under her direction have received both regional and state level recognition for superior performances.  Mrs. Probst is best characterized as an energetic teacher with a gigantic love for students and their families, deeply desiring not only to help students become great musicians but also great people.

Rainbow Middle School -

Located in Rainbow City, Alabama, the mission of Rainbow Middle School is to assure the development of successful, caring, responsible students by providing a nurturing learning environment.

Rainbow Middle School Band is the beginning and intermediate band of Rainbow Middle School.  Our program is designed to prepare each student to become a vital part of the Rainbow Middle School Band and eventually the Southside High School Band.

 Southside High School -

Southside High School is the largest high school in the Etowah County Alabama School District.  SHS serves over 800 students in grades 9-12 from the Southside and Rainbow City, Alabama area.  Our school proudly offers a variety of educational and extracurricular opportunities for our students. 

The goal of the Southside High School Band Program is to encourage students to become quality young men and women using the medium of music.  Our band program serves as an ambassador for Southside High School, the cities of Southside and Rainbow City and the Great State of Alabama.   The SHS Band Staff is dedicated to providing an educational, positive, and safe environment that promotes growth and development in musicianship and character.

“The PRIDE” performs for thousands of people each year at Football games, competitions, concerts, recitals, performances, parades and many other events.  With dedication to musical and personal excellence, this band strives to represent SHS with distinction and class.
